Exclusive Features to Older Pixel Phones
Google's latest Camera app update, version 9.2, introduces Ultra HDR photo support for older Pixel smartphones. This exclusive Pixel 8 feature can now be turned on or off, providing users with more control. The switch has been added to advanced camera settings, enabling older Pixel models to capture Ultra HDR photos for the first time.
Ultra HDR mode stores additional brightness and color information in photos, enhancing highlights and colors on compatible displays when viewed in apps like Google Photos, Google Chrome, or Photoshop. This update requires at least Android 14 and is compatible with currently-supported Pixels (Pixel 5a (5G) and up). Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 owners are already enjoying Ultra HDR mode thanks to this new setting.
Additionally, the Camera v9.2 update introduces the Night Sight Time Lapse option, exclusively available for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users. This feature enhances time-lapse videos in low-light conditions, providing brighter and more detailed footage. However, users cannot manually enable it, and it won't engage if excessive shake is detected. Time-lapse videos shot in Night Sight mode exhibit brighter and clearer scenes with more vivid colors.
The update also includes a minor tweak to the Palm Timer feature, allowing users to activate it only when the self-timer is enabled. The new Google Camera app is part of the December 2023 Feature Drop.
